Fresh Paint!, 1885. Artist: Joseph Swain
Fresh Paint!, 1885. This cartoon depicts Britannia, holding the olive branch of peace, being 'touched-up' by the new Conservative Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, and Lord Randolph Churchill who had become Secretary for India. Following the resignation of the Liberal government after their defeat over the Budget, Lord Salisbury had taken some time before confirming he was able to form a government. A General Election was not therefore called, the two parties simply changing sides in the House. From Punch, or the London Charivari,  July 4, 1885.
