Costume for Constanze, c1913. Constanze, a Spanish lady betrothed to Belmonte, a Spanish nobleman, is held captive by Pasha Selim. A character in 'Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail' ('The Abduction from the Seraglio'), a comic opera in three acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), first performed at the Burgtheater, Vienna, on July 16 1782. Libretto by Gottlieb Stephanie the younger (1741-1800) after the play by Bretzner. Design for a c1913 production at the Paris Opera. From the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
