Bowl with scholars, Transitional period, China, c1630-1662. A blue and white bowl with everted rim painted in the interior with dragon, flying phoenix and horse amid various emblems in deteriorated polychrome enamels. The exterior has underglaze blue decoration of two scholars, one with attendants and dragon-headed cane on a mountain path in a landscape, the other a sage seated in a pine tree watching the blossoms fall, inscribed with a couplet. The base has a six-character Jiajing mark.
