Battle of Philippi, West Virginia, American Civil War, 3 June, 1861.
Battle of Philippi, West Virginia, American Civil War, 3 June, 1861. Union troops under the command of Colonel Ebenezer Dumont, supported by Colonels Benjamin Franklin Kelley and Frederick W Lander, firing on the Confederates under Colonel George A Porterfield. Philippi was the first organised land battle of the war, although its significance is disputed, with some historians dismissing it as a skirmish mockingly named 'The Philippi Races'.
