The British garrison was commanded by General Sir George Eliott (1717-1790)  was knighted, who was knighted for his successful defence of the Rock. He was created Baron Heathfield in 1787. The sortie by the British on 27 November 1781 was a surprise attack that succeeded in routing a Franco-Spanish force preparing for an assault on the garrison.
