'Our Siamese Twins', 1869. Artist: John Tenniel
'Our Siamese Twins', 1869. Mr Gladstone was the new Prime Minister following 1868's late General Election. One of his first acts was to start preparing for the disestablishment of the Irish Church. Many feared that this would lead to attempts to disestablish the English Church but Gladstone and his supporters denied that the English Church would suffer in any way. Here, then, Mr Gladstone prepares to sever the bond between the two Churches as Mr Bull watches anxiously. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 13, 1869.
