'Mr O'Brien, the Irish Giant, the Tallest Man in the Known World', 1803. Patrick O'Brien (c1765-1804), the Irish giant, being measured for a suit by an Edinburgh tailor. O'Brien was 8 feet 7 inches (2.616m) tall. Such abnormal growth manifested by those suffering from Gigantism is caused by an over-active pituitary gland (endocrine system) producing an excess of growth hormone.
