'Government Hospitality', 1867. Artist: John Tenniel
'Government Hospitality', 1867. Lord Derby reads the card presented at the doors of the Palace by Egypt. This relates to a visit made to Britain by the Viceroy of Egypt in July 1867. However, there was much indignation at the way the Government proposed to receive this friend of Britain. Eventually, it was agreed that a special train should be arranged, as should a guard of honour. The Government had actually arranged for the Viceroy to stay, at Britain's expense, in a public house. Outrage was expressed and eventually Lord Dudley offered the use of his house for the length of the Viceroy's visit. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 13, 1867.
