'A Savage Pastime; or, the Morality of Field Sports', 1870. Artist: Georgina Bowers
'A Savage Pastime; or, the Morality of Field Sports', 1870. The rural labourer doffs his hat to the upper class rider who is preparing to set off with the Hunt. A beagle stands to attention in anticipation of the chase. This cartoon illustrates the beginning of pressure by groups opposed to blood-sports, and shows how the moral aims of such groups may not entirely accord with the needs of rural communities. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 26, 1870.
