Ivory diagnostic figure, Chinese, 18th to early 19th century. For centuries in China it was not considered proper for male doctors to examine female patients. Women from wealthy families used carved ivory ‘dolls’, such as this one, to indicate their symptoms so that the doctor could make a diagnosis.
