Emperor Theodosius in the Kathisma (royal box of the circus) overseeing the erection of the obelisk. Marble bas-relief. Base of the Obelisk of Theodosius or Egyptian Obelisk (Dikilitas in Turkish). Late imperial Roman 395-396 CE. This carving is believed to have been sculpted by the "Master B" of this monument during the reign of Arcadius. The hieratic style of his art brought some scholars to call him the first Byzantine artist.
