Duerer, Albrecht (1471-1528)
Portrait of a peasant woman. 1505. The inscription refers to the Windisch Mark, the archaic name for the area around Gurk in Kärnten, southern Austria. The drawing is an unprecedentedly spontaneous study of a woman laughing and is generally regarded as one of Dürer's finest portraits. Pen and brown ink, brown wash, 41 x 28 cm. PD 1930,0324.1.
