In 1605 King Henri IV decided to transform the Marais quarter of Paris into an elegant square with houses in perfect symmetry.  The "Place Royale," later Place des Vosges, was finished in 1612.  Shown is the king's palace, the "Pavillion Henri IV" (1607-08).
