Noto was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt in a new location by Giuseppe Lanza, Duke of Camastra; building of the Duomo in Sicilian baroque style, began around 1703 to designs by architect Rosario Gagliardi, and was finsihed in 1775 under Bernardo Labisi.
