Tlaxcala codex called also Lienzo de Tlaxcala, private coll., facsimile dated 1892, called also Colombina edition; note that the original codex has disappeared and that only facsimiles, called Colombina edition, exist. Scene n° 20: Quauhximalpan. On the 1st of July 1520, Cortes arrives in Quauhximalpan with his troops, exhausted after being defeated; they get some rest inside the temple. Spanish soldiers guard Cortes and Marina. At the top, the tree means that the village is in the forest. The first part (up to scene n°48) tells the story of the Conquest while Cortès is allied with the Tlaxcaltec Indians, the Aztec enemies. The second part has few comments: it describes the period just after the Conquest and the fall of Tenochtitlan-Mexico, the Aztec capital city; the Spaniards between 1523 - 1541 extend their territory down to Guatemala and toward the West, battling against Indian tribes.
