Bombing of the obsolete battleship USS Alabama (BB-8), September 23, 1921. In 1921 she became a dummy ship as the test target of aerial bombs during tests by the First Provisional Air Brigade of the U.S. Army Air Service, commanded by Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell. A white phosphorus bomb explodes on the mast top of the ship in Chesapeake Bay. An Army Martin twin-engine bomber is flying overhead.
