Swayambhunath Stupa (aka Temple of the Monkeys), a Buddhist and Hindu sanctuary on a hilltop above Kathmandu, one of the oldest, most venerated religious sites in Nepal. A golden door. Construction is traditionally attributed to King Vrasadera in early 5th CE. Buddha's painted "Eternal Eyes" are looking in all four directions of the universe from the base of the circular whitewashed tumulus that rises above a platform serving as an ambulatory. Prayer flags are flying from cables. A UNEESCO world heritage monument since 1979.
