Onile figure. Yoruba people, Nigeria. 19th-20th CE. It represents the owner of a house with both male aned female traits, thus standing for male and female ancestors as guardians of the old law. On the head are two birds and a chameleon allduing to the powers of transformation. The left hand holds the right thumb as a sign of a traditional greeting.
