Opening of the tomb of Charlemagne in Aachen Cathedral by Emperor Otto III. 1859. the monumental fresco was unveiled on August 18, 1859 in the Carthusian church in Nuremberg that had then been designated an "Art Gallery". It depicts the moment when Otto III has the crypt of Charlemagne opened and sees for the first time the body of the emperor: Not decomposed, but sitting on the throne with the Gospels resting on his knees and with the imperial sword in his hand.
