Establishment of the Normans: Baptism of Rollo at Rouen, (19th century). King Charles III of France ceded Normandy to the Viking leader Rollo in c911 AD. Rollo agreed to be his Christian vassal and pledged to defend Normandy ("territory of the Northmen") from other Vikings. Rollo and his followers, now called Normans, (Northmen), adopted the French language and customs.
