Pindar and Ictinus, probably 1830-67. Oil on canvas, laid down on panel, 34.9 x 27.9 cm. The lyric poet Pindar (518-438 BC) raises his lyre. Ictinus, the fifth-century BC architect of the Parthenon in Athens, holds an architect's rule. This picture is related to Ingres's Apotheosis of Homer. Bought, 1918 (NG3293).
