One of two plaques with identical representations in relief. These scenes of the Amazonomachia (Battle of the Amazons and Greeks) is importrant from the archaeological aspect, as this was depicted on the outside of the shield of the Athena Parthenos statue, which the great sculptor Pheidias had made for the Parthenon of the Acropolis of Athens.
The plaques were found in the harbour of Piraeus in the winter of 1930-31. They were part of the cargo of a wrecked ship headed to Italy. They derive from the same ancient attic workshop and they were executed around the middle of the 2nd CE.
