The Jokhang ("Seat of the Most Precious") founded in the 7th CE is the holiest site in Lhasa, and in Tibet in general. Every day hundreds of pilgrims gather on the square where the monks chant their prayers at the sound of the "drilbu", the ritual bell, and the somber rythm of "damaru", the double-faced tambourine hit with leather balls.
