Amazonomachy. This fight between Greeks and Amazons took place during the Trojan War. The queen of the Amazons, Penthesilea, has just been killed by Achilles that is holding her, having fallen in love with her after her death. The two heroes are also the portraits of the deceased. Sarcophagus front, marble high relief, Imperial Roman, ca. 230-250 CE. The lid (belonging to another sarcophagus) portrays the deceased couple and a dedicatory incription. On the acroteri Erotes rest on torches turned upside down, as a symbol of the end of life. Marble high relief, Imperial Roman, mid 3rd century CE.
