Figure pilgrim souvenir, Puri, India, 20th CE. Carved wood 9 x 3.5 x 2.3 cm. Carved and painted wooden figure, or pilgrims' souvenir, of Subhadra (sister of Jagannatha). As is usual for the Puri triad, Subhadra is shown in semi-anthropomorphic form: highly stylised with approximate human attributes, most famously the wide circular eyes. Such aniconic images are typical of gods that originated in tribal spheres and subsequently absorbed into the Hindu pantheon. Scholarship has identified tribal deities as typically aniconic as against those of the orthodox Hindu pantheon which were always worshipped in full anthropomorphic form. 2005,0614.4.
