Portrait head of Demosthenes. Roman copy of a lost statue by Polyeuktos. The statue was erected in the Athenian market place in 280 BC, forty-two years after Demosthenes' suicide. With knitted brow and lips compressed, this face is a remarkably sensitive portrayal of a troubled mind. GR 1973,0303.2.
