Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
Eight studies of nude children (verso). Ca. 1504. Black chalk, 31.5 x 27.7 cm.  The lines of poetry at the lower left translate as: 'I alone remain burning in the shadows/ when the sun strips the world of rays all /others for pleasure, but I through suffering/ lie prostrate on the earth, lamenting and/ weeping'. The trio, amongst the earliest surviving chalk drawings by Michelangelo, are generally thought to be connected with Michelangelo's projected, but unrealised, fresco of the 'Battle of Cascina.'
