Clifford's Tower, York. This quatrefoil keep, the King's Tower of York Castle, was originally built by William the Conqueror, and rebuilt by Henry III in the 13th century. The original wooden tower was the site of the massacre of the Jews of York in 1190. The tower takes its name from Roger de Clifford that was executed for treason against Edward II and hanged in chains from the tower walls, after the Battle of Boroughbridge.
