Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace), Imperial Palace (Forbidden City), Beijing. The Imperial Palace was originally built in 1406-20 by emperor Yongle. It underwent modifications and additions during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Chairman Mao stood on Tiananmen gate on October 1, 1949 to proclaim the founding of the People's Republic of China. The plaques on each side read: "Long Live the People's Republic of China "and "Long Live the Unity of the Peoples of the world."
