The Gate of Great Ancestors (Long Zong Men) on the Inner Court Entrance Square. Imperial Palace (Forbidden City), Beijing. During the Qing Dynasty no one (not even the Princes) could come closer than twenty paces away from the steps of the gate, unless the emperor summoned them. The Imperial Palace was originally built in 1406-20 by emperor Yongle. It underwent modifications and additions during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
