Arms of the Earl of Leicester, detail of a tapestry showing the Arms of The Earl of Leicester, Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester (1532-88) and Elizabeth I's favourite, commissioned this tapestry woven in wool & silk. Worcestershire or Warwickshire, England, c.1575-85. The coat of arms proclaims Dudley's power and noble birth. Probably made by Sheldon Tapestry workshop, but the high quality and sophisticated design indicates that Netherlandish weavers were involved. Inv. T.320-1977.
