Construction of the façade started at the end of the 13th CE. Detail of the covering of the four pillars of the doors.  Marble slab with bas-reliefs executed between 1320 and 1330 by Lorenzo Maitani with the help of Sienese and Pisan craftsmen. Biblical scenes from creation to Jabal (son of Lamech): six series of bas-reliefs of an ivy plant whose branches divide the main scenes. First pillar from left with Stories of Genesis: the Creation of fish, birds, plants; Creation of mammals; Creation of man in the presence of two angels; God gives life to Adam and extracts the rib to create Eve; Adam and Eve brought into Eden, the Original Sin, the Condemnation; Expulsion from Eden; Adam working with a hoe and Eve spinning; Offerings of Cain and Abel; Cain kills Abel; Noemi teaches a child to read; Jabal invents sounds (bells); one of Adam's sons with a compass.
