Stone relief of a sphinx.  Achaemenid Persian, Perseopolis, 5th BCE. Male sphinx wearing the imposing horned headdress of a divinity. Originally painted, it was one of a pair flanking the winged disc figure of Ahura-Mazda, a god adopted as the Persian royal deity by Darius I. Originally set up on a façade of Palace G, constructed by Ataxerxes III, but later transferred during or after his reign to replace the original north staircase of Palace H in Persepolis.  82 x 75 x 9 cm.
