Venne, Adriaen Pietersz van de (1589-1662)
A game of Pell-Mell, from an album of 102 drawings. Ca. 1620-1626.  The game is a political allegory; the Winter King, living in exile in The Hague, is about to strike the ball in a game in which he shares his goal with the Dutch stadholder, Prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange, seen on the right. The drawing is in an album, dated 1626, probably commissioned by the exiled monarch as a gift to his Dutch host. Watercolour with bodycolour, over black chalk, heightened with silver; 9.6 x 15.1 cm.
