'The Secret of England's Greatness' (Queen Victoria presenting a Bible in the Audience Chamber at Windsor). Circa 1862-1863. This scene, based on a popular but unfounded anecdote, shows Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle receiving an ambassador from East Africa, to whom she is presenting a fine Bible. Although not a portrait, the envoy is probably based on Ali bin Nasr, governor of Mombasa. Oil on canvas, 66 in. x 84 1/8 in. (1676 mm x 2138 mm). Purchased, 1974 (NPG 4969).
