Black lacquer writing-box (inside). Japanese, Edo period, 17th CE. The inside of the lid on the right shows exquisitely dappled deer crying in autumn, inlaid with copper foil, gold makie and mother-of-pearl. On the left a pine motif is illustrated in the brush tray accompanied by an inkstone and a gilt-copper water-dropper. It is in the decorative tradition of Hon'ami Kôetsu of the Rimpa school. 23.5 x 21 x 4.5 cm. Inv. AC 1974,0513.8.b(&Others).
