Roof of the registered head office of Societe Generale, at 29 Boulevard Haussmann in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, France. Behind is the Palais Garnier Opera House, built 1861-75 in Second Empire style, designed by Charles Garnier. The steel and glass construction of the roof suspends the dome in a self-supporting system of steel bars made by Moysant-Laurent and Savey at the Imphy steelworks. The bank was founded in 1864 and these buildings were transformed 1906-12 by Jacques Hermant, and in use from 1915. Societe Generale remains one of the largest banks in the world, although its headquarters are now at La Defense. The Haussmann building is listed as a historic monument. Picture by Manuel Cohen
