Sculpted figure, Bahia culture, 500 BC - 800 AD, exhibited in the Ecuador room at the Faro a Colon, or Columbus Lighthouse, a monument to Christopher Columbus designed by JL Gleave in 1931, and built 1986-92, in Santo Domingo Este, a suburb of Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, Caribbean. The concrete building is constructed in a cross shape, symbolising the christianisation of the region, and serves both as a museum and a mausoleum holding the remains of Columbus. 157 beams of light are emitted into the sky from the building.
