The son of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, chief advisor to Elizabeth I, Robert Cecil (1563-1612) was appointed Secretary of State in 1590 and succeeded his father as the queen's senior minister after his death in 1598. After Elizabeth died in 1603 he remained as Secretary of State to King James I. From Memoirs of the Court of Queen Elizabeth, published in 1825.
