American aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne after their flight to Japan, 1931. In May 1927 Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902-1974) made the first successful transatlantic flight, becoming a national hero. Afterwards he used his fame to promote American commerical aviation around the world. Lindbergh married Anne Morrow (1906-2001) on 27 May 1929. In 1932 their son, Charles Jr, was kidnapped and murdered in what became known as 'The Crime of the Century'.
