James J Jeffries, American boxer, 1910. Jeffries (1875-1953), known as 'The Boilermaker', became heavyweight world champion in 1899 by beating Britain's Bob Fitzsimmons. A remarkable athlete, he was able to run 100 yards in just over 10 seconds and high jump over 6 feet. Jeffries retired undefeated in 1905 but came out of retirement to fight Jack Johnson in 1910, suffering his first defeat.
