King Edward III refuses succour to his son at the Battle of Crecy, France, 1346 (1864). One of the defining battles of the Hundred Years War between England and France, Crecy was a victory for the English over a much larger French army, brought about largely by the impact of the English longbowmen. During the battle, Edward III (1312-1377) refused to assist his 16 year old son, Edward, the Black Prince, who commanded one of the three divisions of the English army, instead sending words of encouragement with Sir Thomas Norwich for the boy to win his spurs.
