Edward I of England acknowledged as suzerain of Scotland, 1290 (1864). Edward I (1239-1307) was asked to arbitrate on the issue of the succession to the Scottish throne. In return, he demanded that the Scots recognise him as their feudal overlord. The Scots reluctantly agreed to do so until a rightful heir was found. John Balliol was chosen as king in 1292, but Edward continued to assert his authority over Scotland. In 1295, his demand that Scotland provide him with military assistance against France led to the Scots refusal and the foundation of the 'Auld Alliance' between them and the French.
