Botallack Mine engine houses, Cornwall. In the Victorian heyday of the Cornish tin mining industry there were over 600 of these engine houses containing steam engines to pump water out of the mines and power winding gear in the mineshafts. The tunnels of Botallack mine extended half a mile under the sea. The mine closed in 1914.
