Statue of St John on the side of the Great Portal and tympanum of Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma or La Seu, Palma de Mallorca, Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. Saint John the Evangelist is depicted with his symbol, the eagle. The Roman Catholic cathedral was built on the site of a mosque and is a huge building in Catalan Gothic style. It was begun by King James I of Aragon in 1229 and finished in 1601. It towers over the old city of Palma overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
