Church medallion, Vezelay Abbey church, Vezelay, Yonne, Burgundy, France. Vezelay Abbey was a Benedictine and Cluniac monastery founded in the 9th century by St Badilo, who was said to have brought back relics of Mary Magdalene from the Holy Land. The Abbey Church or Basilica of St Mary Magdalene is a 12th century Burgundian Romanesque church. This carved medallion depicts a crowned woman holding a church and a standard. The latin inscription quotes the Song of Songs and refers to the fire in 1120 which damaged the church and led to the construction of the present nave.
