Bradfield House, Uffculme, Devon, April 1853. Albumen print. One of a remarkable series of photographs taken before and after the architect John Hayward extensively remodelled and restored the property for Sir John Walrond between 1852 and 1854. The house had been the seat of the Walrond family since the 13th century, and incorporated a medieval hall at its core. It is unclear whether the architect or the owner, or both, were responsible for recording building work, which included moving the main entrance to the south front, stripping roughcast and adding a service wing to the west.
