An Iron Age hillfort was erected around 400 BC. The Saxons took the British fort in the 6th century. The Normans constructed a motte and bailey castle in 11th century. ln the early 13th century, the buildings of Old Sarum were dismantled for stone and the old town dwindled. The Anglo-Saxon period lasted for 600 years, from 410 to 1066.
