Anonymous, 19th century
Roundel depicting Cao Guojiu, one of The Eight Immortals. China, Qing dynasty, 19th century. Cao Guojiu's name literally means 'Royal Cousin Cao'. He was thought to be the brother of an Empress Cao of the Song Dynasty (although in this roundel his robes bear the waves and rocks motif along the hem, a feature of courtly costumes of the Qing Dynasty). He is associated with a pair of castenets, and sometimes with a memorial tablet in his hands. The pair of castenets are thought to have a calming and purifying effect on the environment. Embroidered silk, diam. 25 cm. Inv. FE.123G-1983.
