Jamnitzer, Wenzel (1507/8-1585)
Mortar, ca. 1550. German, Nuremberg. The mortar is decorated with sculptural ornaments, including the life-casts of medicinal herbs and a lizard. According to legend this reptile could rejuvenate by shedding its skin and growing new tails. It was also believed to regenerate in fire and was therefore interpreted as a symbol of immortality and unchanging logic. Bronze. Height: 4 15/16 in. (12.5 cm); Diam. of rim: 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm). Purchase, Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Acquisitions Fund, 2016 (2016.492).
